Winterfair

Vorkosigan House is astir this evening: the children are getting their own carefully supervised Winterfair party in the nursery wing, and the adults making ready to head to the Imperial Residence for the Emperor's party.

In the Dowager Countess's suite, there's one extra guest making ready.

"That's very high praise," Cordelia interjects in an aside to Duo. "Ma Kosti is Miles's superlative cook, and no, she hasn't been accepting any offers to cook for the Residence so far as I know. -- And oh good, I was hoping to see Alys too. Maybe I'll catch them together."

Her smile at Ivan is fond; not quite the maternal one her sons get, but definitely affectionate.

Duo cheerily investigates the food on the tables closest to them, and takes one of the aforementioned puff things. He also goes for anything that looks like fruit. There's plenty that he recognizes- whoever the original colonists were, they must have taken some flora with them.

When you spend a lot of time in space, you get used to some of the food not being the same as it is planetside. But Duo got spoiled by fresh fruit from Earth, and at Milliways.

Hey look, grapes!

That's not helpful and Ivan smiles at his aunt though its a bit pained.

There are things he should know like who is the far younger man she's with who is devouring the fruit, "You probably will. Mamere hasn't let Tej go far from her since we arrived."

"I'm so glad they're getting on well."

She takes a glass of white wine from a passing servitor, gives the man a smile and nod, and turns back to Ivan. "And how are you and Tej doing, in general?"

"Good, looking forward to finding out where we're headed next. Tej has been plotting languages over maps and considering which courses to start on. I don't think I caught where you're from, Mister Maxwell,"

Too much is in flux at the moment and he is missing information that he should have had. Ivan turns to give Duo his best impression of Simon's 'I can read your soul' look, its not that good.

Duo gives him a sunny smile, completely undaunted. He has had way too many scary people glaring daggers at him for it to really make a dent in his mood.

"Backwater station called L2. Doubt you've heard of it, it's very far from here."

Like, really far.

"We met in transit," Cordelia tells Ivan, "between destinations. Struck up a conversation and ... " She sips her wine, quite cheerfully. "Found we had quite a few interests in common. That was what, four or five years ago? More? Some years."

He can do some mental calculation for that so possibly out near Sergyar and probably not an affair just a friend. That's good, well, not good, but simpler, maybe.

He still should have been warned and he doesn't know where L2 is, "Oh and will you be staying on Barrayar long, Mister Maxwell?"

"Technically, it's Captain," he says. "But just call me Duo. Any family of Cordelia, after all."

He shrugs a little, and snags a glass of wine for himself.

"I'm not sure. I've never celebrated Winterfair, but it sounded like it would be an interesting experience."

"I like to think of it as a bit of xenocultural education," Cordelia says. "Not unlike that stint you and Miles had on Cetaganda, when you were younger."

"Yes, um, that, that was certainly enlightening,"

Also terrifying as he lost track of how many times they seemed close to causing a war.

"I'm always open to more culture," Duo says, turning the smile onto Cordelia.

Because he's here as her date! Get it?

"Behave," she murmurs in amusement, just short of under her breath.

Duo chuckles to himself (sometimes he's the only one who thinks he's funny) and eats the pastry puff thing.

Ivan stares, he will keep it together and then make Miles tell him everything,

"Well, um, Aunt Cordelia is a great teacher."

[veryvorkosigan]

"I like to think of myself as more of a native guide," she says cheerfully. "When I can be."

Duo struggles not to make any more bad jokes.







"You've certainly taught me a lot," he finally manages.

Okay, we never said he was a good person. He sips the wine and waits for Ivan's reaction.

He opens and closes his mouth a few times before managing,

"She's done that for all of us who know her, Captain Maxwell."

[veryvorkosigan]

"You're too kind, Ivan," Cordelia murmurs, and there's no trace of mischief whatsoever in her smile.

"But I'm afraid we've interrupted you on a mission -- if that second plate's for Tej? We really shouldn't keep you from it. Do please let Tej know I'm hoping to see her later, and the same for your mother?"

"I will,"

With a bit of plate reorganizing, he bows to them bow before heading to another section of the ballroom. He should be told about younger boyfriends before meeting them, that would be fair.

"Sorry," Duo says, not really looking very sorry. "I couldn't help myself. I guess I see what you mean about the Vor being more conservative...or was he so surprised because it was you?"

[veryvorkosigan]

"Some of each, I think." Her expression is pretty close to his, both deeply amused and very mildly repentant. "He didn't react at all well when his mother finally started seeing someone, and she's been single since Ivan was born. I think he may have hangups about older relatives having a sex life. Especially older female relatives."

"Well, understandable, I guess. That's a pretty big change in your life, especially when it's someone close to you who's doing the changing."

Duo nods wisely.

"All the same, better to practice getting over it. Grape?"

[veryvorkosigan]

"Doubtless it will be good for him," she says serenely, and accepts the grape with a smile.

"So how do you like what you're finding so far?"

"It's quite the place," Duo says, raising his eyebrows at her. "Is Barrayar a rich planet, generally? Or are we at a careful remove from the slums and I get a tour of those later?"
